If we really think that home is elsewhere, and that this life is a ‘wandering to find home,’ why should I not look forward to the arrival? — C. S. Lewis

Nora Nabors Harris, beloved Selma, Alabama native, age 73, devoted daughter and wife, cherished mother and grandmother, and faithful friend to many, passed away and arrived home Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012. She faithfully served the United States military as a dedicated and loyal Air Force wife in ports from New York to England, Ohio to Turkey, Mississippi to France, and Louisiana to retirement in Gulf Breeze, Florida. During this service and different home bases, she reared four wonderful daughters with her husband Leask Harris, also of Selma.

Nora, humble, quiet and selfless, would not like to hear the words about her, but she was a star in the mid-50’s at Parrish High School. A member of the National Honor Society and Junior Red Cross, Nora was the 1954 Civitan Good Citizenship Award Winner. She was selected to represent Selma in the famed Azalea Classic in Mobile, Alabama.  Nora was a cheerleader and as stated in the December 19, 1956 Selma Times Journal, “A stand-out in the student body, Miss Nora Nabors was elected best all-around and most popular girl in Parrish High’s Who’s Who and won the title ‘Senior Favorite’. She and Leask then attended The University of Alabama.

Nora loved all things plant or flower and was an expert at growing both. During service at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, she and Leask opened and operated The Pottery Nook. She learned most of this knowledge from her beloved parents, Truman and Evelyn Nabors, on the family’s 100-acre farm on Rt. 2, outside Selma.

Nora is survived by her daughters Kathy deCesare and Elizabeth Guerrero of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Alison Thomas of Shreveport, Louisiana, Page Wright of Orlando, Florida and their husbands; her grandchildren Blake and Taylor Thomas of Shreveport, and Matthew and Christopher deCesare of Baton Rouge; her brother Truman ‘Buck’ Nabors of New Mexico and sister Neva Wallace of Shreveport. She is predeceased by her husband, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Leask Harris; brother, Leon Nabors; and parents Truman and Evelyn Nabors.

The funeral service for Nora Nabors Harris will be held at 11:45 AM on Friday, January 13, 2012; graveside services only at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida, a private viewing for the family. Visitation will be at Pensacola Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, Friday, 10:00AM. Guestbook is hosted at pmgfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Nora’s name to:
