Tragedy struck a local family over the weekend when a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning claimed the life of a Selma teen.
Garrett Robinson Coffee, 19, was killed when his 2008 Toyota Camry, which was traveling on County Road 44, veered off the roadway, struck a tree and overturned just four miles west of Selma, according to Alabama State Troopers.
Rescue workers arrived at the scene at about 3 a.m. to find Coffee’s vehicle on top of him.
Alabama State Trooper Greg Eubanks, who was working the incident, said Coffee was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
State Trooper John Reese said the accident is still under investigation.
“We’re still investigating the circumstances during the crash … information might change,” Reese said. “Right now, it doesn’t appear that alcohol was a factor. The father (of Coffee) was on the scene as paramedics were at the scene.”
Active in the Elkdale Baptist Church youth group, Coffee attended a mission trip to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Coffee, who was also a 2010 graduate of Morgan Academy, was awarded a Presidential Scholarship from Wallace Community College-Selma.
An avid skateboarder, Coffee also played the tuba in his school’s band, was a member of the Boy Scouts and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father Donnie Jr.
Coffee is survived by his parents Amy and Donnie Jr., sister Mary Kay, girlfriend Shawlee Farnham, grandparents Iris Robinson, Peggy and Donnie Sr., uncles and cousins.
Funeral services for Coffee will be Thursday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. inside Elkdale Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Henry officiating. The family encourages the public to offer condolences and sign the guestbook at www.selmafuneralhome.com.
