Don’t let trees become a problem

This time next week, Christmas will be over and families will begin looking for ways to dispose of their live Christmas trees.

In years past, the streets of Selma have been lined with used and dying trees for weeks at a time. This year can be different.

The city is taking a proactive approach toward the disposal of trees by offering dropoff sites at the Water Avenue landfill and Four Seasons Garden Center on Cahaba Road.

The idea is to make the disposal of these trees as easy as possible for Selma residents and to keep the streets clear of debris.

The city has had enough trouble as it is keeping brush, limbs, and leaves seperated from household trash. Don’t let this become another instance where the two are mixed together. By dropping your tree off at either location, this mistake is totally taken out of the equation.

Representatives of Selma’s City Council have gone above and beyond to get this information to the people. Now, they need the people to respond.

Starting Dec. 27 and running beyond Jan. 3, there will be plenty of opportunities to dispose of old Christmas trees properly. Please make sure you do your part.

If you do not use the city’s tree disposal services, please find another proper outlet for the trees. Whatever you do, don’t leave your trees on the sidewalk with other trash mixed in.

Not only does it look bad to visitors, it can cause tremendous problems during disposal at city landfills. Let’s all chip in and make this a problem free holiday.
