Thomas Jewett Mitchell, III, “Mitch”

Thomas Jewett Mitchell, III, “Mitch,” passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas.  He was born on May 5, 1941 in Demopolis and was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jewett Mitchell, Jr. and Beatrice Williams Mitchell.  After finishing High School in Demopolis, he attended Southeastern Institute of Electronics in Atlanta, GA., then went to work for Vitro Electronics in Fort Walton Beach, FL.  He lived in Selma during the late 1960’s and worked at WTQX Radio Station as a DJ under the air name of “Dave Paxton.”  After attending the University of Alabama from 1964 until 1967, Mitch moved to Laredo as a DJ with KOYE radio station.  While in Laredo, he managed KOYE and KVOZ radio, he owned and operated Rena Rent-A-Record and Copy Systems, Inc. and was also the Sales Manager of KGNS TV and Time Warner Cable before retiring. Mitch was intricately involved in the community of Laredo by being a concert promoter in the 1980’s and 1990’s, sponsoring the wrestling matches for WWF and he was also a member of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce and was the President of the Optimist Club. Mitch Mitchell was the “voice” for CNN many years ago and also for many prominent businesses in Laredo such as Sames Motor Company, Big Jim’s Liquor and The Rock Trivia Radio Show. Mr. Mitchell is survived by his children; Shelley Mitchell of Boca Raton, FL, James “Jamie” Mitchell and Jaclyn Mitchell of San Antonio, TX., grandchildren; Caleb James Sessions of Boca Raton, FL, and Chloe Michelle Mitchell of San Antonio, TX, a sister; Brenda Mitchell (Robert) Key, and a niece, Ashley Key of Selma, AL, and a nephew, Thomas (Erica) Key, of Elko, NV and many other beloved friends and relatives.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 25, 2011, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Kirk Funeral Home, 651 US Hwy 80 West, Demopolis, AL., (334) 289-1122, with visitation one hour prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN  38105, or to the charity of your choice.
