Dallas County Schools will hold an event to inform parents of different services that could help improve parenting skills.
Dallas County Schools will hold a Parent Awareness Fair Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Selma Convention Center.
Sharon Streeter, Special Education Coordinator for Dallas County Schools, said the fair will make parents aware of the agencies out there to support them.
“It’s a fair that will broaden their horizons and awareness of the various agencies that are there to support them with meeting the needs of their children,” Streeter said. “We will have various agencies there including mental health, Department of Human Resources (Alabama), Concordia College, Wallace Community College as well as the child nutrition program within our school district among others.”
The Parent Awareness Fair is sponsored by the special education department and the parental involvement department within Dallas County Schools.
Streeter said each agency will have a booth at the convention center and information will be given out to parents.
“We’re just going to have an array of agencies that will be there to provide information on how they can assist them in parenting their children in the appropriate ways,” Streeter said. “Booths will be set up where the agencies can pass out information about the support they provide.”
Streeter said there will also be concessions and door prizes will be given out, and admission is free. Streeter said it’s important for parents to come out because some of the information provided is critical.
“It’s important because parents need to be aware of the public agencies that can provide them support in areas that they may not even know that’s available,” Streeter said. “We will have disability determination there that will be able to give them assistance when it comes to identifying disabilities. Also, some pointers on child nutrition will be there if they need that, so these agencies will be housed in one location and will provide them with help that can help them be better parents.”
