Country music superstars such as Reba McEntire, Shania Twain, Keith Urban and Taylor Swift, have made the genre more popular in recent years and now, a taste of Nashville is coming to Selma.

On Tuesday, Oct. 25 Nashville’s own “Down Home,” an inspirational music group, featuring husband and wife team Den and Bobbie West, will grace J.A. Pickard Auditorium’s stage at 7 p.m.

A native of Nashville, gospel singer/songwriter Bobbie, grew up in a musical household. Den, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who began playing at age 12, plays an array of stringed instruments including blues guitar, ukulele and banjo.

Selma Community Concert Association president Doris Holland said the organization works with an international booking agent to help acts, such as Down Home, come to Selma. Live performances, Holland said, are so important to the community.

“It’s a long process, sometimes taking two to three years to get,” Holland said. “We try to offer different types of music, diversity … one of our board members said ‘why don’t we have country, it’s popular?’ They (Down Home) are professional (and) well presented. I know it will be good.”

Holland said the group’s music resembles country music of the 1950s and 1960s.

“I find it interesting how much interest there is in country music,” Holland said. “They’ve shared the stage with popular stars and they hold the audience in awe with a show combining all the excitement of Las Vegas, the variety of Branson and a taste of the Grand Ole Opry.”

And after 72 years of performances, Holland said the SCCA’s concerts have been well received.

“People are glad they come,” Holland said. “We want the little foot-stomping songs that cheer you up.”

Tickets can be purchased from the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, the Selma-Dallas County Public Library or at the time of each concert. Tickets are $70 each for adults, $150 for a family or $140 for a donor, which includes two season tickets. Call 875-9201 for more information.

SCCA was founded in 1940 by Isabel Grayson, Reuben Bishop, Paul Allen and Henry Vaughan.
