With more than 11,000 tickets sold and thousands in attendance, Selma Lions Club organizers deemed the 55th annual Central Alabama Fair another huge success.

And with the addition of karaoke night and the Junior Miss Pageant along with Miss Central Alabama Fair, Tiny Miss and Little Miss pageants, fair rides and petting zoos, the fair — and the weather, did not disappoint.

Fair manager Robo Robinson said the Lions Club was pleased with the fair overall.

“It was a really great fair,” Robinson said. “It didn’t rain; it was good weather and real good attendance.”

Fair director John Haskell said he’s happy about the week’s turnout.

“Everything turned out just right,” Haskell said. “I estimate about 12,000 people came.”

Haskell said this year’s Junior Miss pageant and The “Country Karaoke for Cash” competition were well received by the public.

“It was a great success,” Haskell said. “Karaoke night turned out to be great — we had 32 people. We had double attendance on Thursday night; usually Thursday is a light night.”

And though members don’t yet know the total amount of money raised, Haskell said he expects a heavy sum, to distribute to local charities such as the Salvation Army and Red Cross.

“I hope $40,000 to $50,000,” Haskell said. “Our main charity is Alabama Sight (Alabama Lions Sight Conservation Association), which we give about $5,000 to $6,000 to. We give about $12,000 a year to others … I think we had a good turnout … all vendors had success (and) everyone had a good time … we can’t complain.”

Haskell said the Selma Lions Club thanks the community for its support.

“We want to thank all our sponsors and citizens of Selma and Dallas County,” Haskell said.

“Without the support, we couldn’t give anything to local charities.”

Winners of the karaoke contest, Haskell said, will be released at a later date.
