Selma-Dallas County Relay For Life will “Pink Out the Stadium” for Selma High School’s football game at Memorial Stadium on Oct. 21.

Tanya Miles, chairman of Selma-Dallas County Relay For Life, is calling on those attending football games to wear pink in honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We like to keep the people of Dallas County aware of breast cancer,” Tanya said. “We’re asking football fans, not necessarily just at Selma High’s game, but all football games, if they would pink their stadium out. That’s just where the fans wear pink.”

Tanya said the fans and band members at Selma’s game would wear pink, and pink balloons would decorate Memorial Stadium.

But those in the crowd won’t be the only ones showing support and raising awareness.

“The players will have pink-ribbon stickers on the back of their helmets and the coaches will wear pink wrist bands,” said Leroy Miles, head football coach of Selma High and Tanya’s husband. “Whatever we need to do as it relates to supporting “Pink Out,” we’re committed to doing it.”

Tanya said literature informing those in attendance about breast cancer will be handed out at the gates.

Tanya said the “Pink Out” was done last year and was inspired by her sister.

“My sister would always do something for the city employees to make them aware. She was a breast cancer survivor,” Tanya said. “I always wanted, after she passed, to keep her dream alive of keeping the people of Dallas County aware of breast cancer.”

Tanya said it’s important to keep people aware of breast cancer because it will help save lives.

“People need to know about early detection (of breast cancer),” Tanya said. “The earlier you detect it (breast cancer), the better your chances are.”
