Members of the Selma City Council met Tuesday evening for a budget hearing to discuss the city’s 2011-2012 budget, which Selma Mayor George Evans said hasn’t changed much since last year.

Evans said the budget, which has not been approved, is a balanced one, with an overall, expected revenue of a little more than $17 million and with an unappropriated funds budget of $11,941.95.

“Basically it’s the same budget … there are some lines that have changed based on individual expenditures and transfers,” Evans said. “There will be some changes, modifications, in the overall budget. Every penny we plan on getting, we plan on budgeting.”

Evans said with this year’s budget there have been some challenges. The city, Evans said, is “trying to maintain operations.”

“Right now, especially with the landfill (and) … summer youth employment,” Evans said. “We budgeted $50,000 (for the program) and I wish it could’ve been $100,000 … we need more trucks for public works, and we can’t buy them, but we need them. We need them for trash (and) garbage pickup.”

Officials in the city’s finance department confirmed the budget still may need some revision. Board president Cecil Williamson said a council work session will be held Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. to discuss the budget further. Officials in the city’s finance department hope the council will make a final decision about the budget during the 5 p.m. meeting.
