Keith seeks new instruments

ORRVILLE — Keith High School band director Marcus Rackley has a passion for music, and he wants that same passion to translate to his students — but there’s a problem.
The band only has a limited selection of school-owned instruments, which are in need of repairs. Rackley said the band is in need of much more.
“Right now I’m in the process of getting a program started,” Rackley said. “The percussions, we really need help in that area. We need seven to 10 or more instruments.”
Beginning Sept. 5 Rackley and the band booster club will hold “Play-It-Forward” instrument drive to help put instruments such as flutes, clarinets, trumpets, alto saxophones and trombones, into the hands of music students who are in need for free.
Rackley believes the earlier students begin in a comprehensive music program, the better.
“Beginning band at the seventh grade is kind of late — kids need three years or more to develop their instrument,” Rackley said. “A general music program has to be in place at the kindergarten level … it’s essential. By the time (they) make it to fifth or sixth grade, we talk about instruments.”
Rackley said instruments can be purchased from local music stores, pawn shops or online and can be dropped off at Keith’s main office, located at 1166 County Road 115, Orrville. He suggests such brands as Yamaha, King, Bach, Getzen, Selmer and Jupiter.
“Instruments are easily accessible,” Rackley said. “We want to make sure whatever we got is reputable.”
Rackley also said studying music privately at an early age is helpful.
“People don’t realize the importance of a comprehensive music program — K-12,” Rackley said. “Private lessons helps to develop minds and it helps (children) to be more disciplined throughout their educational career … it gives them the tools they need. I’m living proof … I don’t know where I would be without it (music).”
The drive will go on through the end of the school year. For more information call 875-4155.
