An early morning crash left an 8-year-old Selma girl dead and a 5-year-old with serious injuries.

According to Alabama State Trooper public information officer John Reese, the accident occurred at about 7:35 a.m. on Alabama Highway 14 near the Perry County line.

Early investigations show the driver of the 2004 Ford Explorer, Bridgette Ann Nichols, lost control of the vehicle, which left the road, went down an embankment and rolled.

During the accident, Reese said, Nichols’8-year-old daughter Alexis was killed.

“She was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Dallas County Coroner,” he said.

Another child, 5-year-old Jason C. Nichols, also sustained serious injuries and was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

“During the initial investigation, the injuries were not determined to be life-threatening,” Reese said. “But that could change.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Reese said the accident was still under investigation. However, authorities have determined Alexis, who was a student at Brantley Elementary, was not wearing a seatbelt.
