Name changes, but objective the same

After struggling for years to explain the program which has provided college scholarships and life-enhancing opportunities for young women since 1958, America’s Junior Miss has a new name: Distinguished Young Women. Directors with the national, Mobile-based program anticipate the new name will assure potential sponsors and contestants it is a program designed to empower young women to reach their dreams.
Dallas County‘s Junior Miss will adopt the new name, becoming Distinguished Young Women of Dallas County effective at the program for the high school girls’ class of 2012.
This year’s program will feature students from throughout Dallas County including: Aleysha Bailey (Selma), Sarah Fraiser (Morgan), Rachel Gomes (Morgan), Caitlyn Harris (Dallas County), Shakeria Hayes (Selma), Kalli Jones (Morgan), Alexis Kimbrough (Selma), Oriel Maul (Selma), Ashley Moore (Morgan), Jasmin Peeples (Selma), Jessica Shannon (Selma), Catherine Skelton (Morgan), Demanda Tyera Smith (Selma), Sobeoyone Southall (Selma), Evelyn Stewart (Morgan), Taylour Talbot (Dallas County) and Ashlee Washington (Selma).
Dallas County participants will compete in fitness, public speaking, interview, scholastics, and on-stage talent and will be eligible for more than $3,000 in scholarships for college. The winner will advance to Alabama’s state program in Montgomery to be held January 20-21 where she will be eligible for more scholarships.
The 2011 program, which will be held Aug. 27, will be the 36th program year since beginning in 1976 and has awarded over $10.000 in cash scholarships annually. The program is sponsored by the Selma Civitan Club. Lisa Baker is choreographer and Kay Bryson English, former Dallas County Junior Miss for 1978, will be “Mistress of Ceremonies.”
