For young women looking to gain valuable life skills such as job interview techniques or update resumes, the Miss Central Alabama Beauty Pageant may be the perfect fit.

The pageant is now accepting applications from young women ages 17 to 21, who are looking to build confidence, gain experience in public speaking and win money for college.

Pageant director Beth Pearce said the pageant is an excellent opportunity for young girls to win scholarships and polish interview skills.

“We’re trying to get the word out … to as many people as we can, to get involved … we’re accepting 30 contestants this year,” Pearce said. “We’re laidback and we want girls to have a good time, have a positive experience.”

Sponsored by the Selma Lions Club, the pageant has been a favorite to the area for more than 50 years.

“The community likes it … many come to the fair just to see the girls,” said Lions Park fairgrounds and armory manager Wayne Robinson. “It’s an enhancement to the fair … the girls enjoy it.”

The pageant, which takes place during the Central Alabama Fair, has seen anywhere from 25 to 30 participants throughout the years.

Pearce said the pageant staff works with contestants prior to the pageant to help with the job interview process — such as the appropriate or inappropriate attire to wear and dos and don’ts. Pearce, who’s worked with the program for four years, said she’s seen a positive response from participants.

“The girls feel a sense of accomplishment — especially in public speaking, which is what they’ll face in the real world,” Pearce said. “We’ve had an increase in participants and interest … parents have been so encouraging and supportive.”

With $700 in total cash winnings, contestants also have a chance to compete for $100 in the highest overall interview category during the pageant.

Interested applicants must submit their applications with an $85 entry fee by Sept. 6 to 1 Houston Park Gardens. Make checks payable to Selma Lions Club. Applications are available at Carter Drugs, the Selma Times-Journal, WHBB/WDXX studios, the Selma-Dallas County YMCA and all area high schools. The pageant will take place Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. inside Lions Fair Park. For more information call 875-7684 or 327-8121.
