Progress continues along riverfront

It’s been a month since Selma City officials spoke extensively about improving and updating Riverfront Park and the planned amphitheater, expected to seat about 600 people upon completion. So far, progress is still slow moving.
In a previous Times-Journal article, Selma Mayor George Evans said the amphitheater will include a butterfly garden, playground, water feature and aquarium. The project, he said, will take time.
“It’s going to take people working together,” Evans said. “It’s still a work in progress.”
Two groups slated to help with the project include the Job Corps out of Montgomery and the Air Force Reservists, Evans said. Henry Thompson of the Department of Planning and Development said lights purchased by Alabama Power and the Selma-Dallas County Health Alliance have gone up around the area, and there are still plans to build.
“The military will be taking on some projects — they’ll work, and we’ll purchase the supplies,” Thompson said.
“(We’ll) begin removing portion of buildings, while still keeping historical portions, to begin construction.”
The stage of the amphitheatre will be located in an existing building, beyond Water Avenue where Lawrence Street will feed into the park.
