Crown Health Care Laundry Services employee, Christine E. Johnson, 28, died Monday at Vaughn Regional Medical Center after her torso was trapped inside one of the company’s dryers.
Officials from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department said Johnson was performing regular laundry duties around 6:20 a.m. Monday when, after attempting to remove lint from a dryer, the machine malfunctioned and closed on her body.
Emergency officials were able to pull Johnson’s trapped body from the dryer and said Johnson was coherent when later speaking to officials. After emergency personnel rushed Johnson to the hospital, she was pronounced dead minutes later.
Dallas County Sheriff Department’s Mike Granthum, who is investigating the incident, said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is still investigating the company’s machines to determine why one malfunctioned.
“OSHA believes it was a preliminary industrial accident,” Granthum said. “She looked fine on the exterior, but we believe Johnson had related medical problems. We’re waiting on the autopsy report.”
Rick Hamlin, vice president of operations for Crown, said the company is working with officials to determine the cause of Johnson’s death.
“At this point, our primary concern is for the Johnson family,” Hamlin said.
Funeral arrangements for Johnson will be set for a later date with Miller Funeral Service.
