After battling tumultuous waters with a high water bill for a year, Queen Jackson can finally be at peace.
Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous source, the Selma Water Works Company turned on Jackson’s water sometime Thursday. Jackson is breathing a sigh of much needed relief.
“I feel grateful and it feels good to finally be able to take a bath,” Jackson said. “It’s just a blessing to have water on, and you learn to be appreciative of it when you don’t have it.”
And though Jackson is pleased with her running water, she still believes more should be done for other residents who are battling the same problem.
“If they can do this to me, they can do it to others as well,” Jackson said. “We’ve got to do more for our people in Selma.”
Jackson plans to go before the water board to discuss future monthly water payments.
Jackson’s water bill went from $45 in May of last year to $2,073.45 the following month. Since then, Jackson has been fighting to get her water turned back on.
