Casting call begins Thursday

Selma residents will have their chance at stardom Thursday with open casting calls for a new movie.
Cypress Moon Productions is looking for extras for “The Story of Bonnie and Clyde.” The casting call will take place at Hampton Inn in Selma from 4 to 7 p.m.
“I don’t know what to expect,” Cypress Moon Productions’ Tonya Holly said. “I’ve heard that we could have anywhere from 100 people to show up or more.”
Holly is the writer, producer and director for this film.
Edie Jones, film liaison for the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, said having a good turnout for the casting calls would be a show of support for the production.
“We’re small enough, and we want good business, so we are eager to work with them,” said Jones, of Selma’s interaction with film production companies. “We make them feel welcome, and so they want to come here.”
Ronnie Mac Sherrer of Selma is working with Holly to scout out locations and period-appropriate automobiles in Selma and surrounding areas.
“My excitement is that we can get something positive to come to Selma,” Sherrer said. “It will create attention. It will create some enthusiasm.”
This is the fourth production Holly has worked with in Selma.
“She has a lot of faith in Selma, and I think that’s exciting because that’s what we want other people to see, so many of Selma’s positive attributes,” Jones said.
Sherrer said that success with this film might pave the way for further films to come to Selma.
“If we can make this happen and the city’s behind it and the county’s behind it … if we can pull it off and make it work, this is only one of many that she’s projected to do around this area,” Sherrer said.
Holly said she is “definitely considering” shooting one or more scenes of the film in Selma, and Jones said this kind of business is great for Selma’s economy.
“Anytime they’re doing a film, they’re not only paying people who are acting in the film,” Jones said. “They’re paying the locations, perhaps they’re purchasing food from this local area — we hope that they are.
“They fill up hotel rooms, and they buy gasoline. It’s a big economic booster.”
According to the press release, “all interested parties must bring their photo, contact information and/or resume. People who are not available to attend may mail their information to Cypress Moon Studios at 1000 Alabama Ave., Sheffield, AL 35660.”
The casting call is open to men, women and children ages 10 and up.
“Every time that I’ve had extras casting calls there, they’ve always been really awesome,” Holly said. “We’ve had so many come out before, so I’m expecting a lot of people out, I hope.”
But there’s no reason to believe Selma will be star struck with all the attention.
“Selma is a town that has lived in the national spotlight since 1965,” Jones said. “Selmians are just used to living in the public eye … (but) we’re just normal, average, friendly people, and they like that. We treat them the way we want to be treated. And it’s not a gimmick — it’s just the way Selmians are.”
