Forums were great for Ward 3 voters

When the seven candidates actively seeking the Ward 3 Selma City Council position faced the voters and their questions during two Tuesday forums, the argument we and others made that a special called election was crucial was validated. The fact these seven citizens had to stand in front of some of the residents they will represent for the next year, face questions and offer solutions is truly the best way for such a vacancy to be handled.

And let’s be clear, the reason we were so supportive in this special election was not just because the people in this ward deserved the right to decide for themselves who will represent them for the next year, but the fact the individual elected would have more than a year in office before facing re-election.

The organizations who orchestrated Tuesday’s forums should be applauded as well for their community spirit in ensuring these candidates faced the test of having to explain their positions and discussing what they see as the biggest issues facing Ward 3. This Ward is one of the more diverse in Selma and sits square in the heart of Selma. It’s historic buildings, homes and streets tie so much of Selma’s history together in one place. The representation this Ward warrants deserves this election process and the tough questioning the council candidates received.

Again, congratulations to the organizations for their efforts and thanks to the candidates for standing up to the scrutiny.
