Twenty-five Brownie, Junior and Daisy Girl Scouts from Edgewood Elementary School spent their weekend learning life skills, playing games and enjoying fellowship at its first Girl Scouts Day Saturday morning.

Amanda Pettaway, troop leader, said the girls learned many things during the camp and projects are ongoing.

“It’s been wonderful,” Pettaway said. “They’ve made cards for the military troops, participated in safety preparedness, learned what to do in a disaster and different arts and crafts like making pompom pens and decorating gift bags. We’re having a good time.”

The girls broke up into smaller groups and sung songs, played games, such as Duck, Duck Goose, rhyming and trivia.

Ayanna Travis, fifth grader and Junior Girl Scout, said the day was all about expressing yourself.

“We enjoyed singing and making stuff and just having fun,” Travis said. “You get a chance to communicate with and learn about the other girls. Today was about expressing yourself, and I have recommended other girls to be a part.”

Pettaway and volunteers Alnita Whitt and Vivian Smith, made sack lunches for the girls. Whitt, who also has a daughter in the group, said she loves to volunteer.

“I just love helping kids,” Whitt said. “We did a follow up and review with the kids about what they’d learned and everyone participated.”

The camp ran from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. inside Edgewood’s cafeteria.
