Changes will speed up track meet

The Ralph Shug Jordan Track and Field at Memorial Stadium will again welcome track teams from throughout the state as Morgan Academy hosts another tournament Monday.
But, this time Morgan Academy coach Rob Robinson said there would be some changes in an effort to speed up the proceedings.
“Last week went far too long,” Robinson said of the meet held at Memorial Stadium where more than 20 teams converged and, by the end of the day, events were well behind schedule. “We are going to start the track and field events at 12:30 p.m. and start the 3,200-meter run at 1 p.m., while the field events are going on.”
Robinson also expects more teams to participate in Monday’s meet.
“There were a number of schools who were on spring break last week and so we are expecting more teams this time,” Robinson said. “We are also going to reduce the number of athletes who can participate in each event from each school. This should also help us speed up the event.”
During Monday’s meet, Tuscaloosa Academy (88.5 points) and Lee-Scott Academy (81) were the top two scoring teams in the boy’s events, while Lee-Scott (169) and Morgan (117) led the way on the girl’s side.
Each of these meets are leading up to the Alabama Independent School Association’s state track meet, also set for Selma’s Memorial Stadium, on April 20-21.
