A few hundred athletes, parents and spectators can’t be wrong.
The work at Selma’s Memorial Stadium is overwhelming.
The work, which isn’t even completed, has added decades to the stadium’s life and breathed new life into Selma’s sports scene.
As athletes from around Alabama took to the field and track during the high school meet hosted by Morgan Academy, the Memorial Stadium renovations were put to their first true test and by all reports came through the with flying colors.
Last football season, teams, bands and fans were treated to improved lighting. This year, the improved restrooms, seating, sound system and team accommodations will move Memorial Stadium from a facility some didn’t want to play in to one that will be the envy of the Black Belt.
City administrators, parks and recreation officials and construction supervisors and crew members should be extremely proud of the work already done at the stadium and complimented for making the stadium and nearby Bloch Park, key parts to the bond issue that made the renovations possible.
In the coming weeks, the stadium will again host major track meets, attracting teams and athletes from nearly every corner of the state
These athletes, their coaches and families, in some cases, will take advantage of Selma’s hotel accommodations, restaurants and stores.
There is little doubt the improvements to Memorial Stadium and Bloch Park, which will host a large tournament this summer, were well worth the money and will provide a great return on the investment made by the citizens of Selma.
