Selma High School fell 10-5 Friday afternoon and with it, fell their playoff dreams.

The Saints put up a good fight, but left six runners in scoring position in the loss to Greenville.

“I’m proud of the kids for not quitting,” Selma coach Reggie Glover said. “But at this point we are making mistakes that we shouldn’t be making. A couple of misjudged fly balls, communication errors. Those are mistakes that we should have corrected by now.”

The Tigers struck first in the top of the third inning When Jay Johnson singled, driving in Jerome Cook.

Greenville scored four more runs in the top of the fourth inning to bust open the game after figuring out Selma starter Keyshawn Ford.

“We had a problem sitting back at the start of the game,” Tigers head coach Brad Horn said. “You want to be able to jump out to an early lead, but it has been taking us a bit to get going. We were able to finally sit back and start driving the ball.”

The Saints finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with runs from Deion Daniels and Anthony Blake, but the Tigers answered right back with four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to push the lead to 9-2.

Now the Saints must find a way to play the rest of the season with the dreams of playoff at an end.

“I told them now it’s all about pride,” Glover said. “We have another series next against Wilcox Central, then maybe Carver and Southside. We just have to play with pride and try to finish out he season strong.”
