If you are enrolling in college this fall and looking for a little assistance, Concordia College can help with your first step.
The school is holding its “Open Doors Senior Day” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 25 to give outgoing seniors the chance to sign up for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
“The number one thing this will allow them to do is complete the FAFSA form, which is the first thing they need to do when they are trying to get grants or student loans,” Stanford Angion, Director of Student Services at Concordia said. “It has to be done, but lots of students in this area miss out on the opportunity because they try to do it too late.”
Concordia received a $10,000 grant from the Department of Education in order to take part in the program, which will encourage graduating seniors from across the state to get out and apply for FAFSA according to Angion.
After the signup period in the morning, the school will have different booths available to teach students about the different opportunities available with grants and loans.
“These different booths give students education on just how to apply for these different opportunities,” Angion said. “Sometimes the students don’t apply for enough money are still stuck trying to find money to pay for school.
“Other times they apply for the max value when they don’t really need it and have extra money they spend unwisely and have to pay for later.”
Angion said the open day could also benefit Concordia.
“We are hoping for anywhere between 500 and 1,000 students to come to the event,” Angion said. “We would love for them to be here and see things they love and stay here. It’s a win, win situation for everyone.”
