A Selma woman only made things worse for herself Tuesday afternoon after she escaped from police custody after being arrested for drug possession, leading Selma police on a winding and dangerous high-speed chase through town.

Amber Harris, 29 of Selma, was taken into custody after undercover officers reportedly observed her purchasing drugs on Hood Street shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Selma Police officials, Harris reportedly purchased the drugs from Jaavonn Caver, 31, also of Selma.

After Harris left the scene, she was arrested. When police attempted to arrest Caver, he ran, leading police on a short foot pursuit. During the pursuit, Caver reportedly discarded 34 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of more than $2,000.

According to Selma Detective Sgt. Kenta Fulford, while law enforcement officials were taking Caver into custody, Harris, while handcuffed, was able to contort her way into a position where she was able to get out of the unmarked police car she was being held in.

She then made her way to her blue Ford Fiesta and drove away.

The chase went across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to Water Avenue, through Arsenal Place and then made its way to Dallas Avenue, where Harris continued south past Memorial Stadium, all the way to Inglewood Street and then to Glendale Drive, where Harris drove into her yard and up to her front door.

She made it into her house, all while handcuffed, where she was taken into custody.

Fulford said Caver is being charged with drug trafficking and is currently being held at the Dallas County Jail without bond.

Harris, Fulford said, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and will be charged “with several traffic violations.” She, too, is being held at the Dallas County Jail without bond.
