Each game is a learning experience for Meadowview Christian School’s baseball team and Thursday’s 13-2 loss to Wilcox Academy was just another step in the learning process.
“We are just real young right now,” Trojans coach Lebo Jones said.
“We didn’t even have the chance to scrimmage so right now we are working on figuring out what line-up is best for us.”
Jones said Meadowview (0-2) is young, and with two eighth grade and two ninth grade students playing it’s easy to see the growing pains even on a night where they were able to do things right, other mistakes were made.
“We put the ball in play pretty well tonight,” Jones said.
“But we just made too many mistakes in the field on routine plays. (Pitcher) Joey (Raybon) pitched good enough for us to win tonight, we just made too many errors behind him.”
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Trojans were able to quickly tie the game after Raybon hit a double with two outs left and was quickly driven in by Cody Griffin.
The next three innings would belong to the Wildcats, though.
Wilcox scored two in the second, six in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth inning to pull out to a 13-1 lead.
With the mercy rule in effect, the Trojans came to bat in the fifth hoping to extend the game. It looked like a promising start as Hunter Hale singled to open the inning, but on the next play Hale got caught in a run-down after Brandon Smith hit a ball to second.
After a fly-out and two base-on-balls Toby Waites grounded the ball to shortstop, but the second baseman couldn’t handle the throw and all runners were safe, allowing Smith to score before ending the game.
“We don’t play our first area game until next week,” Jones said. “We still have time to find ourselves.”
