This Saturday, let celebrities bag your groceries.
Calhoun Foods will sponsor “Bagging for Tips” in an effort to raise money for the MJ93 Fund’s annual football camp, scheduled for May 21 at Memorial Stadium.
The foundation is named for Cincinnati Bengals linebacker and Dallas County graduate Michael Johnson.
Johnson, along with other celebrities such as former Selma Saint and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ben Obomanu, Greg Calhoun, Selma Mayor George Evans and District Attorney Michael Jackson, will bag customers’ groceries for tips Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. with proceeds going towards the camp.
Jimmie Coleman, director for Calhoun Foods, said this is a community event he is proud to support.
“One key thing we want to do is get behind Michael Johnson,” Coleman said. “We’re asking everyone to wear their Alabama, Auburn, Seahawk and Bengal gear. Special prizes will be given away to those who represent their teams.”
Coleman said on an average Saturday he sees more than 2,000 customers but for the event, he expects even more.
“We expect to see double that amount,” Coleman said. “Greg Calhoun will be there all day to help. We’ll have special fliers available with great deals and we’ll be giving away gift bags with free stuff.”
In its second year, the Johnson camp mentored and tutored more than 200 children between the ages of 8 and 17 last year and hopes to double that number this year.
“The kids love it — they had a tremendous time,” said Johnson’s mother and business manager, Thomasene. “The camp helps to build children’s self-esteem and confidence. It’s important also for older kids who are seeking scholarships. It brings the community together.”
The camp is May 21 and costs $45 per child. Boys, ages 8 to 12, will practice from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. and boys 13 to 17 will meet at 1 p.m. A cheer camp for girls 12 to 17 will also take place at Bloch Park. The contributions will go toward Johnson’s foundation the MJ93 Fund.
