MONTGOMERY — When Dallas County’s William Lee got a put-back with no time left on the clock to send the Hornets and Midfield Patriots into overtime tied at 54, it looked like they had the momentum.
But it was not to be for the Dallas County Hornets. The third-ranked Patriots won overtime through turnovers and from the free throw line to win 66-56 in the Class 4A central regional tournament Wednesday..
“When that (the shot that sent the game into overtime) happened I thought we had the ballgame, but we really didn’t capitalize like we should have,” Hornet head coach Willie Moore said. “A lot of that is due to (Midfield). We got into the bonus and were trying to get them to foul us, but instead of taking it strong, we faded away on some shots.”
The game was tight throughout, with momentum swinging back and fourth between the teams.
The Hornets lead going into halftime by only one point, 24-23, but couldn’t pull away with plenty of chances close to the rim.
With just 12.3 seconds left, Midfield’s Andrew Gilmore had the chance to ice the game, but missed the second of his two free throws.
Dallas County’s Henry Baker grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball down the court and passed it off to teammate DeAndre Mcintyre who took what was thought to be the last shot and missed, but there was still enough time for Lee to pick up a loose ball and throw up a short jumper with no time remaining.
