The National Weather Service at Birmingham has issued a winter storm warning for Dallas and surrounding counties, effective from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday.
Forecasters say a mixture of rain and snow will likely become all snow Wednesday evening. The snow is expected to taper off after midnight.
While Morgan Academy has decided to delay the opening of school until 10 a.m., other school officials are standing by to wait on word from the Emergency Management Agency.
“Nothing has been decided yet,” said Dallas County Schools superintendent Fannie McKenzie. “We’re working really closely with the Emergency Management Agency in Dallas County and Birmingham. We will wait and make a decision based on their information.”
Don Jefferson, superintendent for Selma City Schools, said students should watch the news and weather reports concerning possible school cancellations.
“I sent out emails five o’clock this morning to all the principals to inform their students,” Jefferson said. “If something comes up, we will call the media but if not, school will resume as usual.”
Rhonda Abbott, interim director of Dallas County EMA, said travel is not recommended and should only happen in the case of emergency.
“If you don’t have to travel, please don’t,” Abbott said. “Should we have power outages, make sure you have the necessities like bread and water.”
Forecasters predict snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches with higher amounts in isolated areas.
As snow increases in coverage and intensity and temperatures drop below freezing, travel conditions could become hazardous. The low expected for Selma is 29 degrees Wednesday night. The high Thursday is expected to reach 49 degrees.
A strong storm system is moving across the Northern Gulf of Mexico, bringing with it the chance of snow.
