Blemishes need some attention

There’s a song by Peter, Paul and Mary that starts, “If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning, I’d hammer in the evening, All over this land …”

Well, if only we could get the Grammy Award-winning trio to come to Selma, we might be able to fix a few things; starting with the Sturdivant Hall directional sign on J.L. Chestnut Boulevard.

On Saturday, Jan. 22 we published a picture in our “Please Fix” series, highlighting the sign and the fact it had lost a top nail or screw and had rotated upside down.

So, instead of properly directing residents to the left down Mabry Street, it instead pointed right into a curb, building and a potential insurance claim.

Since we began this “Please Fix” series a number of weeks ago, we have worked to point out items around our city and county that deserve a little attention. Whether it was litter along a county road or a cracked and broken storm drain, our effort hasn’t been to criticize but to give a little heads up.

The public works departments for the city and county have to cover miles and miles of roads and bridges and it is just human to overlook something small.

And, it has been our pleasure to applaud and thank those employees when the trash has been picked up or the storm drain replaced.

But, the sign has been upside down for at least a week and no telling how long it was broken before we took a picture of it and brought it to the attention of our readers.

As of Saturday, the sign is s still upside down, still pointing the wrong direction.

It would be nice if someone could get to fixing this this week.

If not, just give us a call and we’ll find a hammer and sing while we do it.
