County to test sirens Tuesday

The Dallas County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency have scheduled monthly siren testing for Tuesday at 10 a.m.

“It’s a monthly test we do, weather permitting,” Rhonda Abbott, interim director of Dallas County EMA, said. “We need to know if there is anything wrong. We encourage people in the community to notify us if they can’t hear one of the sirens.”

According to Abbott, there are 14 sirens located throughout the county but the one in Orrville is currently not working.

“Rats got into the wiring and chewed it up,” she said. “It’s going to be very costly to repair, but it has already been sent back so residents in Orrville will not hear their siren.”

The sirens are only for people who may be outside to hear weather warnings, Abbott said.

“We don’t want people in their home depending on hearing the sirens,” she said. “They still need to have weather radios in case of emergency.”

The sirens are activated by the EMA when a severe weather system, such as tornado or thunderstorm, is in the area, threatening those who may be outside.
