VALLEY GRANDE — During its Monday meeting, the Valley Grande City Council voted to amend its sales increase ordinance after it noticed a minor problem in the previous ordinance.
According to Valley Grande Mayor Tom Lee, the new sales tax amendment was passed to increase its coverage area to the limits of the town’s police jurisdiction.
“When the town first incorporated and passed the original sales tax ordnance it didn’t cover the police jurisdiction,” Lee said. “They figured it out about a year later and made the correction. When we passed the new tax ordinance we assumed it would cover the old one as a whole.”
According to Lee, the new tax only covered the original ordnance and replaced it, meaning the police jurisdiction was once again left uncovered.
“We did just what they did to correct it, we came back and passed the new amendment,” Lee said. “Since we have been incorporated we haven’t had a business that is out in the police jurisdiction, but we do it as a precaution. We don’t want a business to start up out there and not get the sales tax from it.”
Lee said since the mistake, all ordinances have been marked with a footnote if any amendments are added to them so an occurrence like this one does not occur again.
“We both made the same mistake,” Lee said. “Doing this will keep us from making that mistake again because we will know where the amendments are.”
