Violence a threat to democracy

All of the facts are not yet known. Those victims still fighting for their lives are dependent upon our prayers and the care of the doctors.
Those investigating this senseless shooting need the time and assistance to bring those responsible to justice.
What is known is that six lives were tragically taken Saturday morning in Tucson, Ariz. A 9-year-old girl was killed.
A federal judge was killed. A U.S. Congresswoman was shot and, as of right now, lives.
But the biggest causality in this unthinkable crime may very well be the representative democracy we all are blessed to live under; the very form of government outlined and constructed by our founding fathers more than two centuries ago.
Not only will this incident rightfully cause elected officials to increase their security, putting yet another wall between those elected and the people they represent, but this shooting will be yet another reason why the best and brightest among us will think twice before seeking elected office.
Our form of government only works when those called to public service do so willingly and give of themselves to serve their community, their state, their nation.
Why would they do so now when the threat of being targeted by criminals is a very real threat?
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has served the residents of Arizona for more than four years now and God willing, she will survive this horror and either she — or someone of her passion and selflessness — will continue that public service for years to come.
