Jane Speed Pegues

Jane Speed Pegues died Monday morning, December 13, 2010. Born near Greensboro, Alabama on September 2, 1932, Jane grew up in her beloved Selma, Alabama, and then lived most of her adult life in Birmingham. She was the daughter of Frances Sledge Speed and Davis Elliott Speed. Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Elliott (Coach) Speed; two half-sisters Edna Earle and Lois; and the love of her life, James C. Pegues.

She is survived by her four children, Mary Frances (Sam) Bowles, James (Paula) Pegues, Steven (Dorothy) Pegues, and Peggy (Michael) Tortomase; grandchildren, Amber Bowles, Jennifer (Joe) Middleton, Elizabeth (Lubin) Kruse, Mary Anna (Robby) Teer, Katie Pegues, Anthony Tortomase, Melissa Pegues and Angela Tortomase; one great-granddaughter, Lena Kruse; and one foster grandchild, Catherine Harris. She is also survived by her brother-in-law B.B. Pegues; her sisters-in-law Ann Pegues and Judy Pegues; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Jane was a long-time member of Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church, and was retired as a bookkeeper from the Cahaba Heights Fire Department.

The family would like to thank the caregivers of South Haven Health and Rehabilitation-Hoover and Golden Living Center-Riverchase who provided loving care during her long bout with Alzheimer’s. You are too numerous to name individually, but we know Mama felt your love.

Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church; the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org; or the Scholarship Fund of the Alabama Emmaus Community, P.O.
