Sacrifice shows true holiday spirit

There is good news this close to Christmas. All 900 of the angels on The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree have been adopted.

But some folks have failed to follow-through, 25 of them haven’t returned the gifts, but we’re sure in the hustle and bustle these kids won’t be forgotten either.

The Salvation Army, and Alex FM put out the call the other day. The community answered in a wonderful way.

Most people in Selma, Dallas County and the Black Belt have seen some financial hard times reflective of one of the worst economies since the Great Depression.

Yet, the fear of what some might not have later didn’t prevent them from digging down deep and giving to children who might not see anything at all under the Christmas tree.

The true spirit of Christmas is one of sacrifice. For it was God who sent his only son down to Earth to live, work and die, so we would know life and a perfect life beyond this one.

It was God’s only son, Jesus, who healed the sick, comforted the distressed, and raised the dead.

It was God’s only son, Jesus, who gave the ultimate sacrifice and became one with the Father again.

Each person who adopted a child from the tree of angels sacrificed something — a re-enactment of the most selfless act in all eternity. For that, all of us should take note.
