Red Cross burglary a shameful act

There is not much that is an absolute in this world. But it is almost an absolute given those who burglarized the American Red Cross office in Selma have seen their name appear on Santa’s naughty list.

The news of individuals breaking into the office and making away with an estimated $7,000 in electronic equipment was completely disheartening during this holiday season.

Just how bad of a person do you truly have to be to steal from an organization whose mission is to help those in need?

Just how desperate are you for a fix, a thrill or money to steal from those whose only goal is to help improve the community in which we all live?

The plea for help from local Red Cross leaders for monetary donations is one we should all respond to.

These men and women — many of them volunteers — are the ones who are in your driveway hours after your home burns down or offering hot meals following a severe storm and loss of power.

These are the men and women who offer CPR classes and organize blood donation drives to help ensure our safety and protect our lives.

Even though the news of the break-in and burglary was troubling, the response on our part should be swift and generous; much like the American Red Cross is when they come to help.
