Grassroots effort on to extend unemployment benefits

The White House is putting pressure on members of Congress by reaching out to the grassroots through e-mail and localizing it by using state numbers.

In an e-mail from the White House Media Affairs Office sent out Thursday afternoon, the heading read, “New Report: Alabama Needs Congress to Act Now on Unemployment.”

The tone of the e-mail was dire, even from the first line.

“Failure by Congress to act on extending unemployment benefits will have stark consequences for Alabama residents, according to a new report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers.”

The e-mail pointed out seven million workers nationwide would lose their benefits while searching for work. Of that seven million, 77,946 are in Alabama.

The e-mail also says without extended benefits, Alabama would have 5,254 fewer jobs as of September and if Congress doesn’t approve the extension, it could cost the state 6,876 jobs by the end of next year.

The benefits expired Wednesday at midnight. Congress has an opportunity to vote to extend them before recessing through January and returning with a new slate of representatives.
