Shoppers encouraged to support hometown businesses during holiday season

Tis the beginning of the shopping season. The Selma-Times Journal and its business partners at home, along with the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce are asking you to spend your Christmas shopping dollars at home. At the very least, residents of Selma and Dallas County should search at home first for those on their lists, rather than run to other outlets to shop.

Sure, as a matter of convenience, going to a big-box chain in another city an hour or so away might be more attractive than a search-and-purchase mission here at various stores in Selma. But here’s an important reminder for you. Not long ago, economists in Maine conducted a study of how a local independent store re-spends dollars in the local area. The study showed the dollar goes to payroll, goods, and services purchased from area businesses, profits spent locally by the owners and donations to area charities.

How much of that dollar stayed in the local economy? Forty-five cents on the average compared to big-box stores in other places, which spend only 14 cents — that’s three times more direct local economic benefit.

The key is this: Local merchants not only keep the economy going; they give extra value to you for buying local. The benefits in terms of local business taxes are a factor. The ability to take things back or get hands-on instructions without fuss or mess is a big factor. And the reduced distance traveled is another big plus.

So, keep these facts in mind when you begin planning Christmas purchases. Local buying means more money in the local economy.
