ORRVILLE — Jameneshia Caver recorded a double-double in Selma’s opener and helped the Lady Saints roll to a 56-32 win over Keith High School on Friday night.
Caver scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and was part of a 1-2 inside-outside punch with Jasmine Peeples, who recorded seven points, nine rebounds and six blocks.
“We need people to step up,” Selma coach Anthony Harris said. “Peeples was helping Caver, and that helped our confidence go up. If we can get that, we’ll be OK.”
Selma didn’t hit its stride until the third quarter, when Brianna Richardson hit two 3-pointers to help spark a 13-2 run to open the second half and open up a 15-point lead.
A 9-0 closed the third quarter to stretch the lead to 20.
Keith lost its opener to Francis Marion in similar fashion, but coach Cecil Williams said he saw signs of improvement.
“That’s the closest we’ve played Selma since I’ve been here,” Williams said. “We played them close for the first half, we just need to learn to finish.”
Lyteisha Phillips scored 12 points to lead the Lady Bears.
Harris said getting production from his post players will be important if the team can’t get points in transition, but there are still some issues to be worked through.
“(Breanna) Smith played volleyball so she’s still getting into basketball shape,” Harris said. “We definitely need to score off of turnovers. We’re still trying to put it together.”
