Harmony Club headed for big time

A photographer for The New York Times will roll into Selma Sunday to take photos of the Harmony Club.
David Hurlbut told me the other day the structure is to be featured soon in the NYT. He’s excited, as he should be. This brings good, positive attention to Selma.
Hurlbut and Bill Tomey have worked hard for years to bring the old building up to what it was in it’s hey day.
The Harmony Club was built in 1909 as a social club by the Jewish community of Selma. Benjamin J. Schuster, a leading merchant in town, lead the project. The first floor was made up of two retail spaces. The second floor was a restaurant and men’s lounge in the back with a poll table an running pokers games out of site of the ladies.
The third floor was a ballroom.
It was boarded up in 1960.
In 1999 Hurbut bought it and started the renovation. You can tell by the way he talks of the building, it’s an artist with a work in progress.
We hope the NYT enjoys the visit.
