Lack of officials ends Meadowview’s season

SELMA — For the senior football players at Meadowview Christian School a tough year came to an anti-climatic ending as their game versus Chambers Academy was cancelled due to lack of an officiating crew.

According to Meadowview Christian head coach John Glasscock, school officials learned well after the kickoff was planned that an officiating association had failed to send a crew to the game.

“I guess there weren’t enough crews to go around … I spoke with an officials coordinator on Tuesday and everything was supposed to be set for tonight,” Glasscock said. “This isn’t ours or Chambers’ fault and I hate that they drove all the way here for nothing.”

Roddie Beck, athletic director for the Alabama Independent Schools Association said late Friday the Selma association did not have enough officials to fill out their required games and had called on another association to help out.

“I was in touch with the schools throughout the evening and told them it was not AISA but the fill-in association who failed,” Beck said.

Meadowview’s home game was not the only game affected by an apparent lack of officiating. Wilcox Academy’s home game this week also had no officials.

“The Wilcox Academy game was also the responsibility of the Selma association,” Beck said.

The canceled game does not affect either team’s record and ends the season for Meadowview, which finishes with a 1-8 record. The lone win came last week on the road at Abbeville Christian.

Officials with the school and with AISA decided the game would not be made up since it did not have playoffs implications. Although Meadowview was eliminated from contention weeks ago, Chambers has clinched a playoff spot and will play next Friday.

“… It’s just null and void like we were never scheduled to play,” Glasscock said.

There is still some discussion by Meadowview officials on how to honor tickets sold to Friday’s game. Early thoughts are those who purchased tickets would be allowed into a home basketball game during the upcoming season.

As far as who is to blame for Friday night’s confusion, Glasscock said clearly, “we are contracted with AISA. They are responsible for assigning crews to the games.”

When asked if AISA will take any action against the association who failed to show up at the Meadowview or Wilcox Academy games, Beck abruptly said, “that discussion will be held in our office.”
