Oct. 15 deadline for nonprofits to file late tax returns

Published 11:17 am Wednesday, October 6, 2010

About 4,500 small nonprofit organizations in Alabama, including 55 in Selma and Dallas County face a deadline of Oct. 16 to file their returns or risk losing their tax-exempt status.

IRS spokesman Dan Boone said many small nonprofit organizations are at risk of losing their tax-exempt status because, according to IRS records, they failed to file the required returns for 2007, 2008 and 2009. They can preserve their status by filing returns by Oct. 15 under the one-time relief program announced by the IRS in July.

Boone also said small nonprofits may only need to file Form 990-N online at IRS.gov, which usually takes about 10 minutes.
