While living in Portland during World War II, as a volunteer at the USO, she met Mr. Johnstone who was stationed there at that time.

They were married in 1943, and Mr. Johnstone returned to the Pacific region until war’s end.

They moved to his home area in Kentucky, and later to Selma where he managed a District Office of Metropolitan Life.

Madeleine spent 50 years active in the First Christian Church in Selma and the state Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

She was an elder and served as an officer for several terms in the Alabama Christian Women’s Fellowship.

Following her husband’s retirement, they moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, but his sudden death in 1973 brought Maddy back to Selma where she began a 25 year “career” as a Pink Lady volunteer at Three Rivers Medical Center.

Travel was a large part of her life, going to many parts of the US including Hawaii, also to China, South America, Australia, the Middle East, Scandinavia and many countries in

Europe.

A wonderful grandmother, her favorite travel was to be with her family, often attending her grandsons’ sporting events and other activities.

In 2001 she moved to Atlanta to be near the family.

Survivors include son Gary Davis Johnstone and wife Jan, grandson Seth and wife Kellei, and grandson Benjamin.

Services will be held in Selma and Biddeford at times to be determined.

Memorial donations can be made to Lutheran Services of Georgia, Inc., “Senior Services” @ 1330 W Peachtree St, Ste 300, Atlanta 30309, or your favorite charity.
