SELMA — Morgan Academy dominated the offensive yardage. They dominated the time of possession. But when it came to big plays, Edgewood had the edge and eventually had the edge on the scoreboard.
Edgewood came into Selma Friday and knocked off Morgan Academy 35-23, evening the Senators’ record at 2-2 and heading into a tough match up next week against Bessemer Academy.
We knew coming in that we were going to have to defend the pass and we didn’t,” Morgan head coach Brian King said. “Our offense really played well, but it’s too much to go out there time and time again and have to answer their score.”
Edgewood generated a total 296 yards of total offense with all of it, with the exception of one yard rushing, coming through the pass.
On the other hand, Morgan more than dominated the stat sheet, racking up 451 yards of total offense, with 431 coming on the ground.
“Tonight was the complete opposite of a week ago when we picked off five passes,” King said. “Tonight we let receivers get behind us and gave up too many big plays.”
Edgewood began racking up big plays from the very beginning of the game as Sam Coleman took the opening kickoff back 93 yards for a touchdown. They then scored touchdowns on their next three possessions to take an insurmountable 28-17 lead into halftime.
They then started off the second half, scoring on their first drive, going 82 yards in just four plays. The drive was capped off by Matt Moore’s 42-yard touchdown run with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter.
Morgan was able to fight back and close the gap somewhat when their defense got on the scoreboard with just 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Morgan senior Walker Mason busted through the Edgewood line to block a Moore punt attempt and then fell on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Morgan was unable to convert the 2-point conversion attempt, leaving the score 35-23 Edgewood.
Coleman added a 1-yard touchdown, while Moore connected for two touchdown passes in the game, one to Collier McConnell and the other to Cole Lipscomb.
Parker Hughes scored two touchdowns for the Senators as well as racked up 161 rushing yards.
In addition to the covered punt in the end zone, McCain Levins added a 22-yard field goal late in the first quarter.
Hughes ended as the game’s leading rusher with his 161 yards, while Edgewood’s Moore led both teams in passing with 295 yards on 19 attempts and two touchdowns.
McConnell finished the game with five receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown.
