SELMA — Jesse Harris was able to step in and guide Selma High School to a 54-0 win over Wilcox last week in Darion Alexander’s absence.

Tuscaloosa Central will be a much tougher foe this week, but Alexander is expected to make the calls under center for the Saints week, much to the relief of coach Leroy Miles.

“I was worried to death about it all week,” Miles said of facing Wilcox. “We didn’t have anybody with experience to step in and I didn’t want any setbacks.”

Miles changed his offensive game plan so drastically changed that the quarterback position, which the Saints use as their primary offensive weapon, was almost entirely removed the offensive attack.

Coaches said before the game, they wanted to limit Harris’ running and wouldn’t lean on him too much.

The result was attempting two just two passes, though both went for touchdowns. Harris also scored on a quarterback sneak.

“He has the ability, he just doesn’t have the experience Miles said. “The game plan was very simple and plain to just run the football. I just didn’t have the confidence to go with Jesse (in a full offense).”

Much has changed due to the big win.

Miles said if Harris has to play again, he’ll the opportunity to make more throws and prove himself in a more active role. If Alexander gets hurt, he would no longer call timeout to get him back as was the case in the closing minutes of the Saints 27-20 loss to Paul Bryant two weeks ago.

“We’ll definitely go more open than last week (if Harris plays again),” Miles said. “But Darion can check plays at the line and get us into the right play, and we need to work with Jesse on being able to do that.”

The Saints are expecting to not have to worry about that this week, because Alexander should back on the field after missing the Wilcox game due to a car wreck.

Alexander’s car flipped three times and hit some trees off U.S. Highway 80 toward Southside High School.

He was banged up in the accident and spent a quick stint in the hospital, but was quickly cleared to return to the field.

“I did want to play, but everything happens for a reason,” Alexander said. “I was cheering from the sidelines, and it was good the backup quarterback to get experience.”
