One man is in custody and another two at-large after the car in which they traveled flipped upside down in a lot on Broad Street across from Church’s Fried Chicken.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday night. Officers are unsure if anyone was hurt in the accident. Police took the driver of the vehicle into custody, but two passengers left the accident scene.

Lt. David Evans of the Selma Police Department said an officer was traveling in front of City Hall on Broad Street when he noticed a car pass him at a high rate of speed. By the time the officer turned his vehicle around, the car had taken off.

Evans said the car hit the railroad tracks on Broad Street and apparently, the driver lost control. Skid marks show where the vehicle cut across three lanes of traffic, hit the grass and dirt in the lot and dug in. The car overturned.

Police officers, firefighters and Rescue 1 all responded to the scene.

Police did not release the identity of the driver taken to the police department.
