SELMA — John Michael O’Toole drove more than 100 miles to Selma Country Club to bring the trophy he won last year back for this year’s winner.

Turns out, he’ll get to keep it another year.

O’Toole benefited from a key mistake on the 18th hole by Freddie Mitchell, who was leading at the time, to win the Dixie Junior Invitational for the second year in a row.

“It means a great bunch to put my name on there twice,” O’Toole, a 17-year-old from Pinson, said. “You never know what the future holds, but this is looking real good right now.”

Mitchell led entering the last hole and made a good fairway shot, but overshot the green and went out of bounds twice — one shot bouncing on the drive way and over the club house.

He finished two shots behind O’Toole and was third after losing a tiebreaker to Jacob Tickal.

Coal Brown was the best Selma golfer in the tournament, shooting 148, five shots behind the leader.

“(Being from Selma) it makes me want to play good,” Brown said. “I just didn’t get the putts I needed to. I was hoping to get the bridies on the par 5s, but it didn’t happen.”
