It’s said that the early bird gets the worm, but at the Selma Farmer’s Market the early riser got the tomatoes.

The market officially opened at 6 a.m. Saturday and more than 200 people had picked up their produce before 9 a.m.

“I didn’t get here early enough,” said Nancy Bennett. “I was hoping to get some tomatoes, but they were gone by the time I got here.”

Bennett said she comes each year to the market to support the local farmers in the area, as well as take advantage of the fresh produce they provide.

“The small farmer is going the way of several other things,” said Bennett.

Two of the vendors, Doug and Pat King, have been bringing their fresh fruits and vegetables to sell at the Farmer’s Market for six years.

“It was a part-time income,” said Doug King. “But now that my wife and I have retired, it has become full-time.”

The Kings enjoy the experience that the market provides.

“We enjoy meeting the people,” said Pat King. “We have a lot of old customers, but we enjoy getting new ones. It is worth the hard work, and there is a lot of hard work.”
