SELMA — A routine traffic stop for suspected reckless driving turned into a drug arrest that saw two Florida residents jailed.

Marcus Lane, 28, and Phyllis Sprague, 43, both of Lakeland, Fla., were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, first-degree, and possession of a controlled substance. Both were booked into the Dallas County Jail under $65,000 bond each.

On Thursday, May 13, a Selma narcotics officer noticed a pickup truck driven recklessly. The truck had two occupants. The officer pulled over the truck and as he spoke to them he noticed what appeared to be a pill bottle in the drivers hand. The driver attempted to take a pill, according to Sgt. Doug Stewart, administrative division commander for the Selma Police Department.

The driver, Lane, told the officer he took Cephalexin, an antibiotic available by prescription, but the prescription belonged to someone else.

Stewart said on further conversation with the narcotics officer the couple revealed marijuana and other controlled substances were inside the truck.
