SELMA — A couple of members of the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture popped into the city for a visit Sunday.

Congressmen Glenn W. Thompson (R-Penn.) and Adrian Smith (R-Neb.) visited Brown Chapel and walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Sunday morning with some federal park employees and Joanne Bland, of Journeys for the Soul, a division of M&M Tours. Charlotte Griffeth and Patty Sexton of the city Planning and Development Department escorted them.

“We have enjoyed our visit to Alabama,” said Thompson as he and Smith posed for photographs.

The congressmen were in the state to take part in a House Agriculture Committee field hearing on the Farm Bill held in Troy on Saturday. Four other members of congress attended the hearing held by committee chairman Collin C. Peterson (D-Minn.) Congressman Bobby Bright (D-Montgomery) of Alabama’s 2nd District arranged the visit.

Griffeth said Thompson and Smith were interested in Selma’s historical landmarks.

“I think it was more of a tourist visit than anything,” she said.
