It’s difficult to start a new tradition, but Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Plantersville Volunteer Fire Department off Highway 22, the fire department tried just that.

The fire department hosted what it hopes will be the first annual Heritage Day in Plantersville.

“It has gone really well for the first year,” said Teresa Walker, organizer of the event. “Next year we hope that it gets bigger.”

Plantersville Fire Chief Mark Walker came up with the idea to have the Heritage Day as a fundraiser for the Volunteer Fire Department.

“Its been good so far,” said Mark Walker. “It has been going in spurts all day. It was slow at 9 a.m. and I was kind of nervous, but as the day went on more people started to show up.”

Pottery, plants and other vendors came out to sell their products to the attendants.

“Everyone has seemed to enjoy it,” said Teresa Walker. “We have had a lot of sales.”

The day also had seven gospel singing groups for entertainment.

“The groups all sang for one hour,” Teresa Walker said.

A local nursery donated two trucks of plants for the fire department to sall, and according to Mark Walker, they were able to empty the contents of one of the trucks by the middle of the day.

“We just want to thank all of our sponsors for today and everyone who came out,” said Teresa Walker.
